CCTV footage helps nail repeat offender Ivan Fernandes in Santacruz dog cruelty case

On 31st May 2014, we received a report from Om Guru Krupa Housing Society, Santacruz that a resident of the building, Ivan Fernandes, had hit the society stray dog which was sleeping peacefully in the passage, with a plastic pipe, and that the entire incident was covered in the building's CCTV footage. Our team of Salim, Zahra and Dev reached the spot the next day and confirmed all the facts of the case. After seeing the video of the attack on the peaceful, lovable dog (liked by most people in the building) we called the Police on 100. Complaint No. W0045550 The police arrived shortly and we then went to Santacruz Police Station to file an FIR. After a lot of discussion and displaying the video evidence, a case was registered against Ivan Fernandes under section 428 of IPC  and section 11 (1) (a) of the PCA. The FIR was filed on June 2nd, 2014, FIR no. 345/14

The most surprising thing we found about this case was that most of the residents of the building love the dog. It is a well-fed, happy dog that greets people in a friendly and inquisitive way and hardly ever barks at anyone.

Yet, Ivan Fernandes has been kicking the dog, hitting it with sticks, chasing it out of the building and in general harassing the poor animal for quite some time. This case showed us that some people can be inherently cruel to animals without any attack whatsoever from the animal.

Upon doing some searching online we found that Ivan is a known troublemaker - he created a brawl in a gym when he objected to AR Rehman's Vande Mataram being played on August 14th 2012.
