The Vakola police have arrested two men for allegedly abducting and slaughtering a pet Labrador for its meat in Kalina on Wednesday. The case was registered with Vakola police on Wednesday when the complainant, Santosh Shetty, couldn't find Brono.
Shetty, a resident of Mira road, had brought his dog along with him to visit his mother-in-law in Kalina's Koliveri village and had tied it outside the house. In the evening, Shetty and his relatives found the dog missing, and waited for it to return thinking it must have strayed.
Worried, he started looking for his dog in the neighbourhood when a resident identified the dog from a picture and said he had seen two men taking the dog with them inside the village.
In the afternoon on Wednesday, Shetty approached Vakola police and filed a missing complaint. Based on details provided by the neighbour, police started checking with locals and reached near the residence of one Mishangv Chinanzam alias khokho, 21, a resident of Imphal, Manipur.
"We found the dog's, which was identified by Shetty. This made our suspicion stronger and we questioning Khokho further. He initially denied abducting the dog, but when we searched his house, we found dog fur and some raw meat and bones. The neighbour had said another man had accompanied Khokho, who turned out to be Laleruni Emyuwan alias Noreni Siglithan, 27, also of Imphal. We suspect the duo killed the dog and cooked it," said a senior police officer from Vakola police station.
He added, "We have booked the accused under IPC sections 379 (theft), 429 (mischief by killing or maiming animal) and section 11 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals & IPC 34 Both work in a spa."
They were present in the court on Thursday and remanded in Judicial Custody
Police said Brono was three-and-a-half years old and had been raised by Shetty, an MNC employee, from when it was a puppy. The seized meat and fur has been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis.
